Teacher guidelines The following guidelines are supplied to enable teachers to carry out valid and consistent assessment using this internal assessment resource. Teachers need to be very familiar with the outcome being assessed by Achievement Standard Media Studies 90993. The achievement criteria and the explanatory notes contain information, definitions, and requirements that are crucial when interpreting the standard and assessing students against it.
Context/setting In this assessment activity students will produce a design and plan for a Gamefroot video game of approximately two to four minutes of game play using a range of game development conventions.
The target audience for the Gamefroot video game is fellow teenagers and parents from your local school community.
Students are not required to produce the video. However, this assessment activity could be linked with Achievement Standard Media Studies 90994: Complete a media product from a design and plan using a specified range of conventions, and with Achievement Standard Media Studies 90996: Write media texts for a specific target audience.
Prior to this activity, teachers will need to provide opportunities for students to explore:
- the processes and conventions of game development
- the structure and conventions of Gamefroot video games
- designing and planning for media products
- examples of completed designs and plans of appropriate quality to meet the requirements of each grade.
Conditions As part of this activity, students will create a blog blog that details the production of their design and plan. Students will need to regularly reflect on their progress with the design of their concept, treatment, and pre-production plan.
Students will have approximately eight weeks of in-class and out-of-class to complete their design and plan. Much of the work can be completed in out-of-class time.
Resource requirements Students will require access to online social media and game-making tools such as:
- Gamefroot - Game Creator Online
- Gamefroot - Online Blog
- YouTube
To assist their planning and design work, students will also need access to:
- effective examples of Gamefroot Video Games
- a range of online video games
- examples of design and planning materials of appropriate detail and quality
- blog sites
- templates or forms to assist in their planning.
